As part of the international project Baltic Manors ROUTE – an initiative aiming to create a cultural route connecting castles and manors across seven countries surrounding the Baltic Sea a training event of the Lithuanian Castles and Manors Association took place at Hugo Šojus Manor in Šilutė in November, 2025. The event brought together well‑known scholars and experts in hospitality and communication. Intended for owners, managers, and enthusiasts of manor heritage, the event attracted considerable interest.
The managers of castles and manors are also the best guides to present their cultural heritage sites. A large group of participants learned storytelling nuances, discovered fascinating historical details, received practical advice and inspiration, and explored the Hugo Šojus Manor museum's exhibition.
Historian, museum specialist, and Doctor of Humanities Jolanta Skurdauskienė, in her presentation The Daily Life of the Oginskis Family at the Turn of the 19th – 20th Century, invited participants to take a closer look at the life of one of the most prominent noble families of Samogitia. The rhythm of manor life depended on the seasons, the liturgical calendar, family celebrations, visiting guests, political circumstances, and ultimately the social status and activities of the hosts.
Dr. Salvijus Kulevičius, Associate Professor at Vilnius University's Faculty of History, outlined the path that led to today's positive appreciation of manors – reflected in excellent examples of heritage adaptation, museum exhibitions, and initiatives dedicated to revitalizing manor culture. He also discussed what motivates local communities and heritage groups to engage with manors, how historical ties, family memories, and a sense of place inspire action, and how manor heritage becomes an object of tourism and discovery.
Public speaking and communication expert Julija Brodskė shared insights on how to captivate visitors, highlight the unique character of each manor, and create an emotional connection with guests. She spoke about what makes a story compelling and memorable, and how authentic personal accounts, details, and emotions can bring history to life.
Guide Agnė Abromavičienė, who has visited many Lithuanian castles and manors, offered both theoretical and practical insights. She discussed how to turn a visit to a castle or manor into the best possible experience—not only through engaging storytelling but also by creating a holistic and memorable atmosphere.
