Ilzenbergas Manor

The Ilzenberg manor is mentioned in historical sources dated 1515 when it was founded by a baron of the Livonian Order, Berndt Kersenboick. According to the surviving scripts, the baron possessed 615 ha of its own land and also ruled over a territory of 2,234 ha belonging to local peasant crofts. Throughout its long history, Ilzenberg was owned by families of the German barons Heyck, Korff, Sacken and Orgies gen. Rutenberg, and the family of local gentry Dimšos.

In 2003, the manor became a private property. Its intense recovery was started in December 2012 and involved reconstruction of delapidated buildings as well as restoration of the interior of the manor house and its authentic functionality. The main building of the property, i. e. a richly decorated house in classical style of the second half of the 19th century with its authentic cellars dating back to the 18th century, was opened to the public in 2017.

The surrounding gardens contain a display of sculptures under the theme of 'Love-Harmony-Court' dedicated to the commemoration of the centennial of the restored Lithuania. A five-hundred-year old oak tree is another major attraction of the gardens. In 2018, a special planting design was implemented to create a botanical representation of ten human emotions whereas five oak samplings grown from the genes of the oldest oak tree in Lithuania Stelmužė were planted in the most representative places of the garden. The neighbouring lake which borders on Latvia has the legendary Love Island which may be reached by the newly constructed Bridge of Love.

In May-September, our single visitors are welcome to join guided tours around the manor and gardens on weekends whereas larger organized groups are invited to book tours and degustation of locally produced foods at any time of the week. All our visitors experience the unique atmosphere of the place which, as a matter of fact, must have impressed a committee of European travel experts who nominated Ilzenberg the third place in the EU project Destination of Excellence of Lithuanian Cultural Tourism 2017 .

The Ilzenberg manor and farm is the only place in the Baltic states and one of the few in the northern Europe which implements principles of natural farming. Products grown in our natural farm have been certified internationally as ecological. We produce over a hundred of different products which are distributed through an online shop, our special retailers and partners in different places across the country. During weekends in May-September visitors at Ilzenberg are welcome to our restaurant which offers a menu of carefully prepared court meals.

Ilzenberg hosts a range of cultural events, camps and concerts. The main manor building contains a few stunning rooms: the magnificent great hall with an antique grand piano of a particularly soft sound (113 sq.m.; up to 110 people); a cosy dining room (80 sq.m.; up to 52 people); spacious historical cellars with four vaulted rooms in red brick (160 sq.m.); a conference room with a terrace (50 people); an elegant library suitable for business meetings; an exceptionally splendid grand suite on the ground floor (90 sq.m., category 5*+; sitting room with a fireplace, bedroom, spacious bathroom, mini kitchen with a private access to the gardens); a cosy small suite on the ground floor (60 sq.m., a sitting room with a fire place, a spacious bedroom and a bathroom). The second floor of the manor contains nine camp-type bedrooms of varying sizes, the largest over 100 sq.m. Those rooms can sleep 50 people. There is a kitchen on the ground floor which may be used to cook meals for the guests.

The surrounding gardens represent an old English style park with an area of 14 ha containing ponds, beaches on the lake shore and romantic walking paths. An outdoor amphitheatre with a seating capacity of 300 people on wooden benches and over 3,000 on the green lawn is used for festivities, special events and concerts.

The Ilzenberg manor has been restored for the benefit of Lithuanian people and all its visitors to promote cultural activities, healthy lifestyle and educational programmes. It may be booked for court weddings, photosessions and children camps.

Visitors are welcome at any time of the year.
